The stunning third and final novel in Stieg Larsson’s internationally best-selling trilogy

Lisbeth Salander—the heart of Larsson’s two previous novels—lies in critical condition, a bullet wound to her head, in the intensive care unit of a Swedish city hospital. She’s fighting for her life in more ways than one: if and when she recovers, she’ll be taken back to Stockholm to stand trial for three murders. With the help of her friend, journalist Mikael Blomkvist, she will not only have to prove her innocence, but also identify and denounce those in authority who have allowed the vulnerable, like herself, to suffer abuse and violence. And, on her own, she will plot revenge—against the man who tried to kill her, and the corrupt government institutions that very nearly destroyed her life.

Once upon a time, she was a victim. Now Salander is fighting back.

±1±: Best Buy Lisbeth Salander is one of the all-time-great action heroes: a ninety-pound child-sized woman who can seriously disable a humongous thug. Covered with tattoos and piercings, she's deeply withdrawn and belongs to a secret club of hackers. We meet her this time in the hospital with a bullet in her head, hip and shoulder, and multiple murder charges awaiting her if she recovers.

Journalist Mikael Blomkvist, a brilliant journalist and once Salander's lover, is determined to expose the lies and schemes that have falsely branded Salander a sociopathic killer.

Salander's story is intertwined with a sinister group inside the Swedish security police (SIS) called The Section. The SIS has no idea it harbors this ruthless elite within its ranks. The Section built a whole espionage network around Salander's father, Zalachenko, a Soviet defector. Even after the Cold War is over, Zalachenko and the unsavory secrets he knows have to be protected. This involves declaring his daughter Lisbeth mentally incompetent and keeping her locked up as much as possible.

It's important to read the first two books in the Millennium trilogy first, so you already know Salander's horrific life story. This book is really the final flushing out of all the nasty people who have persecuted her since childhood and the righting of her wrongs. There's a lot of tricky detective work, and a very satisfying courtroom scene.

Now and then the author stops the action to discuss women warriors throughout history. This is his real subject, I think. There are several amazing women warriors in his plot, not only Salander but also a gorgeous giantess of a secret agent, a belligerent woman bodyguard and a tough editor.

I loved the Millennium trilogy. The world now has a powerful new cultural icon in the girl who kicked the hornet's nest. on Sale!
