European hornet (Vespa crabro) in general seem to leave one or two guards at the nest. The guards try to grab or touch anything get in the nest, or even quit. The nest is in a tree in Warwickshire, United Kingdom. These hornets grow to about 4 cm (half inch) in length, although the queen reaches 5 cm (2 inches). The back half has the familiar yellow and black stripes of the smallest "common wasp," but the front half has a characteristic red-plum.
